32) Two of my favorite tools.
My two favorite tools in filmmaking are on pretty opposite ends of the spectrum. One of them I’ve only used once and the other I use on every shoot. My girlfriend is often jealous of me talking so much about them, which are Astera light tubes and SuperTechno Cranes. The super techno crane is the most versatile tool in filmmaking. It allows for up to 75 foot telescope and booms and elegant camera movements with precision accuracy. The only caveat is the large size, requirement of a large truck to transport, And the price of well over half of $1 million. On the flipside, Astera tubes come in a case of eight indoor very versatile lighting instruments. Since their introduction in 2018, they have been on almost every shoot I have done and their ease of use and iconic look has quickly become a staple. A box of eight lights costs about $10,000. That’s why I usually opt to rent. I love them both dearly and the creative empowerment you feel when using them.
